Lions Place American Flags at Star Cemetery

The Star Lions placed approximately 225 American flags on Veterans' graves at the Star Cemetery for the Memorial Day weekend.  The Star Cemetery, located on Plummer Road northeast of Star, has over 2500 graves dating back to the 1800's.  The oldest Veterans served in the Spanish American War.

Flags will also be placed at the cemetery for Independence Day and Veterans' Day.  If you wand to help with this project, please contact us and we will send you the dates and times.

The Lions-Who We Are...

Lions are more than 1.4 million strong... men and women...young and old.  You will find us in more than 180 countries and geographical areas.  We speak dozens of languages and vary in nature and customs.

We share a common spirit.  Since our beginning in 1917, we have been united in a single cause:  helping those less fortunate.  We are tackling the tough problems like blindness and drug abuse as well as diabetes awareness-and finding help and training for the deaf, disabled, underprivileged and the elderly.  In fact, whatever the community needs to make life better, we're there to help.

We are the youngest major social service organization, yet we have grown to be the world's largest.  We are succeeding because we have embraced all those committed to building a brighter future for the world and for themselves.

And with a new generation of enlightened members, Lions clubs are working smarter and faster with greater commitment than ever before.

We are people just like you.  We are Lions, and, we serve.

"What is an American Patriot and Why Should I Try to Be One?"

The Star Lions Club sponsored the 2008 Lions Club Patriotism Essay contest in the Star Elementary third grade classrooms this spring. Students were asked to write a one page essay on the subject, "What is an American Patriot and Why Should I Try to Be One?" Winning essays were selected and winners announced at the Lions Club meeting on April 14, 6:30 pm., at the Star City Hall.

Winning first place and a $100 savings bond was Danasia Kamppilo from Mrs. Miller's class. Second place and a $75 savings bond went to Cami Miller, also from Mrs. Miller's class. Third place winner and the recipient of a $50 savings bond was Spencer Wahlers, from Mrs. Hansen's class. Honorable Mention was awarded to
Emilyann Yuruki, also from Mrs. Hansen's class, and Haleigh Gardner and Jessica Cabrera, from Mrs. Diffenbaugh's class. All students received a certificate and a Lions "Git-R-Done" pin.  Each student also read their essay in front of the large audience of parents, teachers, students, Lions, and community members.

Following the awards' presentation, Lions 39W District Governor, Darrell Hatfield, spoke about being a Lion and traced the beginning of Lions Club to a group of businessmen headed by Melvin Jones in 1917. He noted that in 1925, the Lions were challenged by Helen Keller to be "Knights for the Blind" and this was the beginning of the Lions International service to the blind.

Kathy Donahue, Star Lions president, spoke briefly about the community pr
ojects of the local club. Although the club is small, she emphasized that much has been and will continue to be accomplished in the community of Star.

In addition to the stars of the evening, the Star Elementary third grade essay winners, other dignitaries in attendance included Star Mayor, Nathan Mitchell, Lions Past District Governors, Gary D'Razio and Sandy Oswald, Meridian Lions President, Stevie Beehler, and Meridian Lions Rodeo Senior Queen, Ginny Burney.
